3 | Featured in Southern Living: 5 Expert Tips to Declutter Your Home This Fall

At SHIFT into Organized, we believe fall is one of the most powerful seasons for resetting your home. As schedules shift, routines settle, and we begin preparing for the holiday months ahead, it becomes the perfect opportunity to create space - physically and mentally - for what matters most.

Last fall, we were honored to be featured in Southern Living, where we shared five simple, practical decluttering strategies designed to help homeowners create calmer, more functional spaces before the busy season begins.

While the original article was published in October 2025, these principles remain just as relevant today as we move through another seasonal transition. You can view the original feature here: https://www.southernliving.com/5-tips-to-declutter-this-fall-11823771

Below is a SHIFT perspective on those same five tips - grounded in the systems we use every day with clients inside their homes.

Why Fall Is the Ideal Time to Declutter

Fall naturally invites a SHIFT inward. We spend more time at home, routines become more structured, and the pace of the year begins to tighten as the holidays approach. This season creates a natural window for resetting your space before life becomes full again. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s creating ease, flow, and functionality in the spaces you use every day.

1. Start With a Simple Plan

Clarity always comes before action. Before you begin pulling anything out, take a moment to set up a simple system: one donation bin, one trash bag, and one “relocate” basket for items that belong in another space. This removes the pressure of decision-making in the moment and gives you a structure to follow from the very beginning. You’re not trying to figure it out as you go - you’re simply following a clear process.

2. Work in Small, Manageable Areas

One of the biggest barriers to decluttering is starting too big. Instead, focus on one contained space at a time: a drawer, a shelf, a cabinet, or a single category. Small areas create visible progress quickly, which builds momentum without overwhelm. At SHIFT, we often say: clarity comes from containment, not chaos.

3. Think Ahead to the Next Season

Decluttering becomes easier when you stop organizing for every version of your life at once. Instead, ask: What will actually support me in the months ahead? What can be stored until a different season? What is simply taking up space right now? This shift in thinking helps your home stay aligned with your current season of life - not the version of you from six months ago, or the one you’re not in yet.

4. Use Time, Not Just Energy

If you wait until you “feel like it,” decluttering rarely happens consistently. Instead, use time as your boundary. Set a 20-minute timer, work only within that window, and stop when the timer ends - even if it’s not finished. This keeps the process sustainable and removes the pressure to complete everything in one sitting. Consistency always creates more lasting change than intensity.

5. Pause and Acknowledge the Progress

Decluttering is not just physical work - it’s emotional work too. When you finish a space, even a small one, take a moment to notice it. Notice the space, notice the ease, notice what feels lighter. That pause matters. It reinforces the transformation and helps your nervous system register the change. And whenever possible, bring your household into the process so the systems you’re creating are supported beyond the initial reset.

Bringing It Back to SHIFT

These five principles are part of a larger philosophy we use in every SHIFT project: creating intentional, functional spaces that support real life. When your home feels clear, your nervous system follows. When your systems are simple, your routines become easier to maintain. And when your environment supports you, everything feels lighter. This is never about doing everything at once. It’s about starting where you are and building from there.
