4 | Featured in Southern Living: 6 Habits of People Who Always Have an Organized Kitchen

At SHIFT into Organized, we believe the kitchen is more than just a place to prepare meals - it’s the heart of the home. It’s where mornings begin, conversations happen, lunches are packed, and memories are made. When this space feels calm and functional, it has the power to positively impact your entire day.

Earlier this year, we were honored to be featured in Southern Living, where our founder, Rebecca Deans, shared six simple habits that help create a kitchen that’s not only organized, but easy to maintain.

While the article was published in April 2026, these habits are timeless because they’re rooted in intentional systems - not perfection.

Below, we’re sharing a deeper look at these six habits and how we help our clients implement them every day.

Why an Organized Kitchen Matters

The kitchen is one of the hardest-working spaces in your home. It’s used multiple times a day, often by several people, which means it can quickly become overwhelming without simple systems in place.

An organized kitchen isn’t about having perfectly styled countertops or color-coded pantries. It’s about creating a space that works for your daily routines and supports the way your family actually lives.

When your kitchen functions well, meal preparation becomes easier, cleanup feels more manageable, and everyday life flows with less stress.

1. Give Everything a Home

One of the biggest reasons kitchens become cluttered is because items don’t have a designated place.

When every utensil, appliance, container, and pantry item has a home, putting things away becomes second nature. Instead of searching for what you need, you can simply enjoy using your kitchen.

Organization should remove friction from your day - not add to it.

2. Create a Daily Reset

One of the simplest habits you can build is an end-of-day kitchen reset.

It doesn’t have to take long.

Load the dishwasher.
Wipe the countertops.
Put away anything left out.
Empty the sink.

Just a few intentional minutes each evening prevent clutter from building and help you start each morning with a clean slate.

3. Prioritize Function Over More

A well-organized kitchen isn’t filled with every gadget you’ve ever purchased.

Instead, it’s filled with the items you actually use.

Keeping only what serves your daily routines creates more space, makes cabinets easier to access, and allows your kitchen to function more efficiently.

At SHIFT, we believe functionality should always come before aesthetics.

4. Organize by Zones

Think about how you naturally move through your kitchen.

Keep cooking utensils near the stove.
Store prep tools close to your prep space.
Place dishes near the dishwasher for easier unloading.

Grouping items by how you use them creates a kitchen that works with you instead of against you.

5. Be Intentional About What Comes In

Organization isn’t only about what you remove - it’s also about what you choose to bring into your home.

Before purchasing another kitchen gadget, serving piece, or storage container, ask yourself:

Will I actually use this?

Being intentional with what enters your kitchen helps prevent clutter before it starts and keeps your systems sustainable over time.

6. Keep Systems Simple

The best organizing systems are the ones you’ll actually maintain.

Simple labels.
Easy-to-reach storage.
Clear categories.
Accessible containers.

When your systems are intuitive, everyone in the household can participate in maintaining them.

Organization should make life feel easier - not create another chore.

Bringing It Back to SHIFT

Every kitchen we organize begins with understanding how our clients live.

We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions or organizing for social media. We create intentional systems that support your routines, simplify your day, and bring more ease into your home.

Because when your kitchen functions well, the rest of your home often follows.

That’s the kind of transformation we love helping our clients experience.
